Harbin Engineering University, referred to as "Harbin Project", is located in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. The school originated from the Military Engineering College of China People's Liberation Army (Harbin Military Engineering) founded by 1953. 1970, Harbin Institute of Shipbuilding Engineering, with the naval engineering department as the main body, was established in the original site of Harbin military industry; 198 1 became the first unit with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees; 1994, renamed Harbin Engineering University.
