Abstract: Mathematical modeling competition for college students is a comprehensive, applied and practical extracurricular scientific and technological activity. Many students who participated in the mathematical modeling contest gave up halfway because of difficulties. How to let more students take part in the mathematical modeling competition? How to guide students to participate in mathematical modeling competition more effectively? This paper expounds how to make the contestants (including teachers and students) give full play to their creativity and initiative from three aspects: selecting team members, organizing pre-competition training and formulating award-winning policies, so that students can achieve better results.

First, the background of college students' mathematical modeling competition

The mathematical modeling competition was first initiated by the American Institute of Industrial and Applied Mathematics on 1985. The National Mathematical Modeling Competition for College Students is an annual communication competition for colleges and universities nationwide sponsored by the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC) and the People's Republic of China (PRC) Mathematical Society. The purpose of the competition is innovation, team spirit, participation and fair competition. Since 1992 was established in China, it has developed rapidly. At present, it has become the largest basic subject competition in domestic universities and the largest mathematical modeling competition in the world. 20 1 1 There are 125 1 universities and 19490 teams from 33 provinces/cities/autonomous regions (including Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions), Singapore and the United States (including undergraduate group 16008). It can be said that mathematical modeling competition has become the largest extracurricular scientific and technological activity in colleges and universities in China.

College students who take part in the math competition are required to form teams, with 3 people in each team, regardless of major. During the competition, the contestants can use all kinds of books, materials, computers and software to browse online, but they are not allowed to discuss with anyone outside the team (including online). Students who have participated in the modeling competition feel that they have benefited a lot. Mathematical modeling plays an important role in cultivating students' creative thinking consciousness and ability and improving their comprehensive quality. More people should take part in the mathematical modeling competition. How to let more people participate in the mathematical modeling competition? How to guide students to participate in mathematical modeling competition more effectively?

Second, how to effectively guide students to participate in mathematical modeling competition

1. Select the contestants of the mathematical modeling contest.

Establish a mathematical modeling association for college students. At the beginning of each academic year, the association organizes recruitment activities to widely publicize mathematical modeling for students in grades 1 ~ 2, so that students can know what modeling is about, let them know the use of mathematics and how to use it, stimulate students' interest in learning mathematics and enhance their curiosity.

From April every year, the "School Mathematical Modeling Competition" is held for all college students. It is suggested that the three participants in the team come from different departments and majors and have certain expertise in mathematical modeling, computer programming and writing. Hire an expert group to review, select a number of first and second prize teams, set the award-winning ratio not to exceed 25% of the participating teams, and organize a defense for the participating teams that won the first prize. If there is a high level, a grand prize can be awarded. The results of the competition will serve as a reference for selecting and participating in the "National Mathematical Modeling Competition for College Students" and the "International Mathematical Modeling Competition for College Students".

2. Organize pre-competition training of mathematical modeling competition.

During the summer vacation every year, organize tutors, students who won the "School Mathematical Modeling Competition" and some outstanding students in modeling activities to conduct pre-competition training. Because the topics of the annual mathematical modeling competition are quite extensive, the professional fields involved are different, and the main mathematical methods used in each professional field are different, so students are under great pressure when studying. It is suggested that students can be divided into several classes according to their majors in the training process, and each class focuses on learning mathematical theories and modeling methods closely related to their majors. In this way, the learning content is greatly reduced, there is not too much burden, the goal is clear, and the study will not be too tired.

In addition to the necessary professional knowledge, the knowledge needed for mathematical modeling competition also needs the support of differential equations, mathematical statistics, mathematical programming, optimization theory, graph theory, numerical methods, computer application software and so on. With a wide range of knowledge, it is difficult for teachers to collect information, and students feel confused in the learning process. Without suitable teaching materials, it is impossible to achieve good learning results. It is suggested that some backbone modeling teachers in the school compile different modeling training materials according to their own professional fields. Each textbook involves the introduction of simple technical terms in this field, the brief introduction of mathematical theories involved and the introduction of mathematical software related to these theories. Because the professional field is fixed, even if the content is updated, it is still relatively easy to modify, so that students can systematize their knowledge and get in touch with the most cutting-edge knowledge from systematic learning.

3. Establish a reward policy for winning the mathematical modeling contest.

3. 1 Award winners

(1) Students who win prizes in mathematical modeling competitions at all levels can get corresponding credit awards.

(2) Appropriate bonuses.

(3) Every year, students who have achieved excellent results in competitions in various subjects are commended.

(4) Students who have won the first prize at the provincial level or the second prize at the national level in academic competitions may be recommended to study for a master's degree without examination.

3.2 Lecturer's Award

(1) Calculate the appropriate workload for the instructor. The instructor of the mathematical modeling competition instructs a team for 30 hours.

(2) In combination with the results of the academic competition and the evaluation and employment of professional titles under the guidance of tutors, the award-winning tutors will be given priority to the promotion of professional titles under the same conditions, and they will be selected for the Excellence Award of Undergraduate Teaching Quality.

(3) Select the excellent instructors of the subject competition every year and give corresponding rewards.

(4) Appropriate bonuses.

In a word, the mathematical modeling contest is a very beneficial activity. Participating in the mathematical modeling competition is of great help to give full play to the creativity and initiative of the contestants and improve their scientific quality. For teachers, guiding competition can improve their personal quality and ability, learn more frontier knowledge and accumulate experience in effectively managing students. For students, participating in practice, experience and creation, cooperation and sharing will have an immeasurable positive impact on their future study and career development, so that participating students will benefit more.
