Language courses
The English learning system of the Preparatory College of Waikato University is a course of CAEL, which belongs to academic English. There are eight grades in all, from high to low. If you successfully pass Grade 7, you can directly enter undergraduate study; After successfully passing Grade 8, you can directly enter the postgraduate study, and it takes about 12 weeks to study from each grade to the next. This is what people often say: direct promotion of language.
If a student wants to come to a language class, it is such a process: after coming, our language institute will test you first, that is, internal testing, and divide classes according to your grades. And if you don't do well in the internal test, or for example, your listening, speaking, reading and writing scores are a little low, you are likely to be classified as Grade 4 or Grade 5. From level 4 to level 5, it is 12 weeks, and from level 5 to level 6, it is 12 weeks. I have to take an exam every time I go up. The whole system is very strict, which ensures that students can be substantially improved in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and also provides students with solid training in English composition, English thinking, New Zealand research methods and group discussion. It belongs to small class teaching, with no more than 20 students in each class.
Of course, students can also consider taking IELTS directly in Hamilton. As long as you reach the IELTS score, you can also enter the main course. At the University of Waikato, there is an IELTS test, which is very convenient.
In addition to the CAEL system mentioned above, there is also a relatively relaxed language course called General English, which is relatively simple, not so strict and has many start dates. But this is not a direct system, and the training of students is not as good as that of academic English system; Students must think carefully before they can enter the next course.
