The school, formerly known as Shanxi Medical College, was founded in the ancient city of Bingzhou, 19 19. 1932 changed to private Shanxi Chuanzhi Medical College. 1940 changed its name to medical major of Shanxi University.

1946 was upgraded to National Medical College of Shanxi University. After the founding of New China, the school entered a brand-new development period. 1953 Independent school, renamed Shanxi Medical College. 1955 became one of the six medical colleges with health departments in China. 1996 changed its name to Shanxi Medical University.

The school is the first forensic undergraduate professional college approved by the Ministry of Education, the first batch of authorized units for master's degree in China, the first batch of authorized units for bachelor's degree in China, the third batch of authorized units for doctor's degree in China and Shanxi Province, the first batch of authorized units for doctor's degree in nursing in China, one of the 25 medical colleges offering seven-year clinical medicine in China, one of the first eight medical colleges in China to restore pediatric undergraduate specialty, and a university supported by the basic capacity building project of universities in the central and western regions.

The first batch of "excellent doctor education and training plan" pilot units of the Ministry of Education, and clinical medicine specialty is the first batch of national "undergraduate teaching project" pilot specialty for the comprehensive reform of undergraduate specialty in local universities.
