Yunnan University for Nationalities, located in Kunming, is a comprehensive provincial key university founded by the Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Yunnan Provincial People's Government. It has been selected into the "Excellent Legal Talents Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, the bilingual talents training base of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and the scholarship receiving institution of the China Municipal Government for overseas students, and is a doctoral degree awarding unit. The school was founded in August 195 1, formerly known as Yunnan University for Nationalities, and is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning for nationalities in People's Republic of China (PRC).

In April 2003, it was renamed Yunnan University for Nationalities. The school has two campuses, Lianhua Campus and Yuhua Campus, covering an area of 2,550 mu, with two post-doctoral research stations, two first-class doctoral programs, 16 first-class master programs,1/two disciplines master programs, 16 professional master programs and 76 undergraduate programs.
