John williams (1922— 1994) is an American writer, poet and scholar. Dropped out of school, did radio broadcasting, and never served in the army. After retiring, he entered the university and got a doctorate. 1945- 1985 teaches college English and creative writing at his alma mater, Denver university. He edited and published an academic collection, English Poetry in the Renaissance, and also created two poems.
I have only written four novels in my life: Only Night (1948), The Butcher's Cross (1960), stoner (1965) and Augustus (1973). This book won the prize.
On john williams's writing, British writer julian barnes commented: "When I call it' excellent', I mean that they (Butcher's Cross and stoner) have exceeded the evaluation criteria within their respective types."
