Chongqing Normal University, founded in 1954, is one of the earliest higher normal schools established after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The school is the first batch of authorized units for bachelor's degree approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee and the third batch of authorized units for master's degree approved by 1986.
