The school's predecessor can be traced back to 1908, one of the six higher normal schools in China, Zhejiang official secondary normal school. Hangzhou Normal University was founded in 1978. Around 2000, five schools including Hangzhou Institute of Education merged one after another. In 2007, it was renamed Hangzhou Normal University.

The school has a beautiful environment and beautiful scenery. There are three campuses in Cang Qian, Yuhuangshan and Xiasha, which are located in Hangzhou Future Science and Technology City, West Lake and Qiantang River respectively, covering an area of 654.38+0.989 million square meters.

There are 19 colleges, 1 public teaching units and 1 directly affiliated hospital (Hangzhou Second People's Hospital), with 20,280 full-time students (excluding independent colleges), 2,724 full-time master students, 40 doctoral students and 495 international students.
