The school is an ordinary middle school jointly organized by Southwest University and Sanya Municipal People's Government, which is dominated by ordinary high schools, supplemented by secondary vocational education and characterized by art and sports.

The school's predecessor was Guangdong Agricultural Reclamation Tongshi Secondary Vocational School, which was founded in 1979. The school has been renamed as "Hainan Agricultural Reclamation Sanya Secondary Technical School" and "Sanya No.6 Middle School"; 20 17, the school was officially renamed Sanya Middle School of Southwest University.

20/kloc-June/July official website shows that there are 239 teaching and administrative staff in the school, among which 40% are teachers with senior titles, 39% are young teachers introduced from famous normal universities in China, and 16% are teachers with master's degree or above.
