Northwest A&F University, referred to as "Xi Nong" or "Northwest Agricultural University", is located in the agricultural city of Yangling. It is one of the national key universities directly under the Ministry of Education, one of the 32 vice-ministerial key universities, one of the national key universities under the "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project", one of the 40 national key universities under the Ministry of Education's "Subject Construction Plan for Xinjiang" and one of the "60" key universities. Established by Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Water Resources, State Forestry Administration and other ministries 16 and Shaanxi Province. It is also the birthplace of modern higher agricultural education in northwest China. Among them, the wine major ranks first in the country.

The school's predecessor was 1934, the National Northwest College of Agriculture and Forestry Science and Technology and the related scientific and educational units established in Yangling. 1September, 1999, with the approval of the State Council, the former Northwest Agricultural University, Northwest Forestry College, Institute of Soil and Water Conservation of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Northwest Water Conservancy Research Institute of Ministry of Water Resources, Shaanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shaanxi Academy of Forestry and Northwest Botany Institute of China Academy of Sciences merged to form Northwest A&F University.
