Wenzhou University, referred to as "Wenda" for short, is located in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province and sponsored by Wenzhou Municipal People's Government. It is a university jointly established by Zhejiang Education Department and Wenzhou Municipal People's Government, a key university in Zhejiang Province, and a doctoral degree awarding unit. It has been selected into the pilot universities of the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, the first batch of construction units of the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute, and the first batch of new engineering courses of the Ministry of Education.
It is also the Wenzhou Model Innovation Experimental Zone for National Entrepreneurship Training, the first batch of national universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, the first batch of construction units of "Zhejiang Internationalized University", the Zhejiang Teacher Education Base, the excellent school for undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education, the founding member of the Innovation Alliance of high-level local universities in the Yangtze River Delta, and the member unit of CDIO Engineering Education Alliance.
Wenzhou University was formed by the merger of Wenzhou Teachers College (founded in 1956) and former Wenzhou University (founded in 1984) in 2004. After the evolution of "the merger of two schools and the integration of seven schools", the source of running a school can be traced back to Wenzhou Normal School founded by 1933.
