China Geo University was founded in 1952, formerly known as Beijing Institute of Geology, and was formed by the merger of Geology and Engineering Departments of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University and Tangshan Railway Institute. 1960 was identified as a national key university by the central government. Moved out during the Cultural Revolution. 1975 moved to Wuhan as a whole and was renamed Wuhan Institute of Geology.
1987, the State Education Commission approved the renaming of Wuhan Institute of Geology as China University of Geology, with its headquarters in Wuhan and Beijing.
