The school was established on the basis of Tsinghua University Petroleum Department 1953, which brought together some teachers from Tianjin University and Peking University. 1960 was identified as a national key university; 1969 moved to Shandong and changed its name to East China Petroleum Institute; 1988 was renamed Petroleum University, which consists of Beijing and East China; In February 2000, the school was placed under the management of the Ministry of Education by China Petroleum and Natural Gas Group Corporation, and it was made clear that the University of Petroleum (Beijing) and the University of Petroleum (East China) were relatively independent; In June 2005, the school was renamed.
