Ocean University is a sea-related university, which mainly refers to a university with the ocean as its main research object and characteristics. Marine economy is an important part of national economy and a new economic growth point. Marine professional education is the most direct reflection of the national economy and people's livelihood's demand for talents and science and technology in the marine field. The evolution of the names of China's sea-related universities mainly comes from five directions: Ocean College, Navigation College, Fisheries College, Engineering College and Normal College.

It was renamed from Ocean College. The schools evolved from this direction belong to comprehensive colleges in nature, mainly focusing on science and engineering majors related to the ocean. For example, China Ocean University evolved from the Department of Oceanography of Shandong University-Shandong Ocean College-Qingdao Ocean University-China Ocean University.

School construction

The school has four campuses, including Laoshan Campus, Yushan Campus and Fushan Campus, covering an area of more than 2,400 mu. The West Coast Campus covers an area of about 2,800 mu, and the first phase was completed and opened in September 2022. There are 1 department, 20 colleges and 1 basic teaching center. There are more than 34,000 students, including undergraduates16,600.

There are more than 3,900 graduate students/KLOC-0, more than 3,000 doctoral students and more than 480 international students. There are 4,025 faculty members, including 2,096 full-time teachers, 635 doctoral supervisors, 778 senior professional technicians, 0/.003 deputy senior professional technicians, 6 academicians of China Academy of Sciences and 9 academicians of China Academy of Engineering.
