2008 is the 70th anniversary of Wu Da's westward move to Leshan, and it is also the birthday120th anniversary of Wang Xinggong's old headmaster. In order to commemorate the old president who made great contributions to the development of Wuhan University, Wuhan University built a statue of Wang Xinggong beside the sakura roof of the old library.

From1June 1934 to1July 1945, Wang Xinggong officially became the president of Wuhan University1year, second only to Li Da (14). In the long-term work, Wang Xinggong gradually formed his own school-running thought, and put forward: "The task of a university is to set an example for the people morally, explore advanced theories in knowledge, and study the cause of promoting social progress in skills." With his unremitting efforts, Wuda started postgraduate education from 1935 to 1936, and established an agricultural college, which developed into a comprehensive university with all five colleges, 15 departments and 2 research institutes.

1937, War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out. Wang xinggong made timely and steady preparations for the relocation of colleges and universities, which made Wu da suffer the least damage in the relocation of colleges and universities. In the face of national disaster, Wang Xinggong made many speeches, calling for anti-Japanese, instilling the spirit of anti-Japanese war in teaching by teaching and educating people, with special emphasis on personality education in war and difficult times.

1938, Wang xinggong led the school to Leshan, Sichuan, and refused to let the Kuomintang set up a division in the school to protect progressive students and support them to carry out anti-Japanese propaganda activities.

After Wuda moved to Leshan, there was a shortage of materials and funds. Wang xinggong tried his best to overcome many difficulties and insisted on the normal development of teaching and scientific research, which enabled Wu da to continue and develop. Regardless of his illness, he traveled all over the rear area of the Anti-Japanese War and recruited scholars and celebrities. Regardless of his background or faction, he is inclusive and often invited in person, thus hiring many excellent professors and achieving outstanding academic achievements.

He inherited the tradition of Cai Yuanpei's eclecticism and meritocracy, and appointed Zhou Yusheng as the provost (Zhu Guangqian was replaced because of his political disagreement), Zhao Shimei as the dean, and a large number of well-known professors and scholars such as Ye Shengtao, Zhong Fang, Zhang Zhenru, Yang Duanliu, Tao Yin, Shi Shenghan and Yue Hu gave lectures in various departments. Guo Moruo, Huang Yanpei and other well-known patriotic Democrats were also invited to give lectures and comment on the current situation. After Wu Da became one of the "Five Famous Universities in the Republic of China" in 1930s, it was once again called "Four Famous Universities" together with National Southwest Associated University, Central University and Zhejiang University, and was also highly praised by the famous historian of science and Dr. Joseph Needham of Cambridge University in England. Wang Xinggong was the first to take the lead in the glory of "Leshan period" of Wuhan University.

During 1947, many students of Sun Yat-sen University were arrested in anti-Chiang demonstrations against civil war, hunger and persecution. He repeatedly argued with the military and political authorities in Guangzhou, demanding the release of the arrested patriotic and progressive students. After being rejected, Wang Xinggong left school angrily.
