Lanzhou University is a 985 university, 2 1 1 university, and it is a double-class university. Lanzhou University is a comprehensive national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC). It was jointly established by the State Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Ministry of Education. It is a world-class university (Class A), a key university under the "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project", and was selected into the "Everest Plan" and "Strong Foundation Plan".

As of July 2008, the campus area of the school was 3800. 137 mu, with 2 campuses and 3 affiliated hospitals. There are 37 teaching departments, 100 undergraduate majors, 45 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, 23 first-class disciplines authorized by doctor's degree, 18 types authorized by master's degree, 1 types authorized by doctor's degree, and 19 post-doctoral research stations.
