It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and co-founded with the national "2 1 1 Project" Shanghai * * *.

Founded in 1949 and 65438+February, the school is the first foreign language institution established after the founding of New China. Its first president was Jiang Chunfang, a famous Russian translator, publisher and founder of the encyclopedia of China.

Later, it was officially renamed as Shanghai International Studies University on 1994 after being inherited and transformed by the Foreign Language School affiliated to East China People's Revolutionary University, Shanghai Russian Institute and Shanghai International Studies University. It has a complete teaching system for undergraduate, postgraduate, junior college (higher vocational), adult education, online education and international students.

As of April 20 14, the school has two campuses, Hongkou and Songjiang, with a total area of about 74.7 hectares. The school library is one of the central libraries of the National Library Consortium of Foreign Languages Institute, with a collection of about 920,000 paper documents (more than half of which are original foreign language books). A large-scale digital audio-visual education resource library has been built. The school has a world-class simultaneous interpretation system, as well as satellite ground receiving devices, closed-circuit television systems, wireless network systems, language laboratories and other school-running facilities.
