Information on Linguistic Pathology in American Universities

Linguistic pathology is a branch of applied linguistics. Linguists study the characteristics of patients' language and thinking through the intermittent language disorder caused by brain diseases, or with the help of some special symbolic concepts, so as to speculate and analyze some abnormal variations of normal language, and then study remedial measures on this basis. Because the research objects (including congenital and acquired) are different, such as the disability of pronunciation organs and motor nerve disorders, they are often divided into two categories: the correction of speech defects and the rehabilitation of speech disorders. The former focuses on physiological anatomy, while the latter focuses on neuropsychology. All belong to the medical field, but all aim at restoring normal speech. At the same time, many tasks, such as pronunciation correction of organ defects after surgery and speech training of speech disorders during treatment, require knowledge of linguistics and experimental phonetics, so this subject is often listed as a research project of modern linguistics.
