1956, the school was founded in response to the development needs of China's railway locomotive and rolling stock industry. At that time, it was Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Manufacturing School. 1958 was upgraded to Dalian Railway Institute, formerly managed by the Ministry of Railways. In February 2000, it was handed over to the Liaoning provincial government for management. In May 2004, it was renamed Dalian Jiaotong University.
The school has the right to award bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctor's degree, and has the qualification to recommend outstanding fresh graduates to study for graduate students without examination. The school is a key discipline construction university of first-class universities in Liaoning Province.
