This school has a long history. Formerly known as Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (1934), Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (1953) and Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (1960). Became the first institution in China to obtain the qualification of postgraduate education in Chinese medicine, formerly known as Hunan University of Science and Technology (1990). In 2002, it merged with Hunan Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
