Shanxi University, located in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, is one of the first three national universities in China. Originally known as Shanxi University Hall, it was founded by Timothy Richard, an Englishman, and Cen Chunxuan, the governor of Shanxi Province. Its predecessor can be traced back to Jinyang Academy and Lingdetang Academy in Ming and Qing Dynasties at the latest. The original school site was in Houjia Lane, Taiyuan (now taiyuan normal College). In the early Republic of China, it was renamed Shanxi University, and 19 18 was confirmed as the national Shanxi University, and 193 1 was renamed Shanxi University. Shanxi University is a comprehensive research university jointly established by the People's Government of Shanxi Province and the Ministry of Education. It is one of the first batch of universities jointly established by different provinces in China, and one of the five universities supported by the central region, and one of the national "comprehensive strength improvement projects for universities in the central and western regions" (one province and one school) 14 universities.
