Historical evolution:

The school was founded in 1938, formerly known as the Agricultural College of National Yunnan University, located in Chenggong County, Kunming. 1958 Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College was established independently and moved to Heilongtan in the northern suburb of Kunming. 1962 Southern Yunnan University and Western Yunnan University merged into Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College, 1969 moved to Binchuan County, Dali Prefecture, 65433.

1980 moved back to Heilongtan in the northern suburb of Kunming. 1983 became an authorized unit for master's degree, and 1993 was listed as a key university in Yunnan province. In 2003, it became an authorized unit for doctoral degree, and in 2007, it set up a postdoctoral research mobile station.
