The history of the school can be traced back to 1893, and Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang, established a self-improvement school at the invitation of the Qing government. After the dialect school, Wuchang Teachers College, National Wuchang Teachers College, National Second Sun Yat-sen University and other periods, it was named National Wuhan University in 1928, which was the first batch of national universities in modern China.
In 2000, Wuhan University merged with Wuhan University of Water Resources and Electric Power, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University to form the new Wuhan University.
Campus environment
There are 558 genera and more than 800 species of seed plants in the campus of Wuhan University, including 1 1 family, 17 rare and endangered plants and 13 ancient and famous trees. In addition, there are a large number of small shrubs, wild flowers, medicinal plants and rock plants, such as Panax japonicus, Ganoderma lucidum, Lygodium japonicum, Paederia, Saxifraga, Ranunculus Jiangnan and so on.
There are Sakura Castle, Sakura Avenue, Sakura Top, Luojia Square, Lingbo Gate and other related attractions on the campus of Wuhan University. The campus of Wuhan University, with a variety of national first-class protected tree species, is a branch of Botanical Society of China Botanical Garden.
