Yunnan Normal University, formerly known as the Teachers College of National Southwest Associated University, was born in 1938. 1946, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University, which formed the National The National SouthWest Associated University, were demobilized and returned to the north. Their teachers' college stayed in Kunming to set up its own school, which was named National Kunming Teachers' College. 1950 changed its name to Kunming Normal University, 1984 changed its name to Yunnan Normal University, and 1999 merged with Yunnan Institute of Education and Yunnan Institute of Physical Education. In August 2000, Yunnan Bank School was merged into Yunnan Normal University.

The terrain is bounded by Yuanjiang Valley and the wide valley in the southern section of Yunling Mountain Range, which is divided into two major terrain areas: east and west. The eastern and central Yunnan Plateau is a part of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, with an average elevation of about 2000 meters. It is characterized by gently undulating low mountains and round hills, and various types of karst landforms are developed. Mountains and canyons alternate in the west, and the terrain is steep. The relative height difference between mountains and canyons exceeds 1 000m. The top of the mountain above 5000 meters is covered with snow all year round, forming a strange and magnificent alpine glacier landform.

The altitude of the whole province varies greatly, with the highest point at 6740 meters above sea level. Kawalpo, the main peak of Meili Snow Mountain in Nvshan Mountain range of Deqin County, located at the border of Yunnan and Tibet. The lowest point is 76.4 meters above sea level. In the Sino-Vietnamese border river where nanxi river meets the Red River in Hekou County, the straight-line distance between the two places is about 900 kilometers, and the altitude difference is more than 6,000 meters.
