Hohai University's predecessor can be traced back to the "Hohai Engineering College" founded in Nanjing in 19 15. It is the first institution of higher learning in China to train water conservancy talents. 1924 merged with the Engineering Department of National Southeast University to form Hohai University of Technology, 1927 merged with National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, and later renamed as National Central University and Nanjing University.

From 65438 to 0952, the water conservancy departments of Nanjing University, Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University and East China Water Conservancy College merged to form East China Water Conservancy College. 1960 was recognized as a national key university by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. 1985, the traditional school name "Hohai University" was restored, and Comrade Deng Xiaoping personally wrote the school name.

Hohai University is located at the northern foot of Liangqing, Gulou District, Nanjing, covering an area of more than 800 mu. The campus environment is beautiful, there are trees and flowers all year round, and the towering fatong stands in the middle of the road. The school has successively won the titles of "National Top 300 Greening Departments" and "Garden University" and "Garden Unit" in Jiangsu Province. It has been rated as a civilized unit in Jiangsu province and an advanced collective in ideological and political work of party building in Jiangsu province for many times.

1986 hohai university set up a branch in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, and later changed to a campus. Changzhou Campus is an important part of Hohai University, and it is an important support for the university to build a high-level characteristic research university. The campus is located in Suzhou-Xichang Expressway Economic Development Zone, Changzhou National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, adjacent to Changzhou administrative center, covering an area of 436 mu.

Hohai University Library consists of three campus libraries, with a total area of about 4 1 0,000 square meters, of which the headquarters and Jiangning campus libraries have an area of about 3 1 0,000 square meters, the Changzhou campus library has an area of about 9,000 square meters, and the reference room has an area of about 1.76 square meters.
