In China's universities, "Polytechnic University" refers to the undergraduate colleges whose names include "Polytechnic University", "Polytechnic Institute" and "Polytechnic Institute".

1949, National Central University was renamed National Nanjing University, and the following year, it was renamed National Nanjing University. From 65438 to 0952, during the adjustment of departments in China, the former Institute of Technology of Nanjing University was the main body, and Nanjing Institute of Technology was incorporated into the relevant departments of Jinling University and Jiangnan University, and was established in the original site of National Central University.

Later, some majors of Wuhan University, Zhejiang University, Jiaotong University and Fudan University merged one after another. Nanjing Institute of Technology was the largest institution of higher learning in Nanjing at that time, with complete engineering system and strong comprehensive strength.

From 1956 to 1960, Nanjing Institute of Technology has been divided into several departments and established or participated in the construction of four institutions of higher learning:

1955, the Central Ministry of Higher Education decided to move the Department of Radio Engineering to Chengdu, and jointly established Chengdu Institute of Telecommunication Engineering (now University of Electronic Science and Technology of China) with Jiaotong University and relevant departments of South China University of Technology. With the efforts of Dean Zhang Chen, Wang Chuang Haisu and jiangsu provincial party committee, Premier Zhou Enlai decided to transfer 19 backbone teachers from the broadcasting department in 1956, and the rest stopped flowing.

1958 Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology (now the main body of Nanjing University of Technology) was established by the Department of Chemical Engineering. In the same year, the Department of Food Industry moved to Wuxi and established Wuxi Institute of Light Industry (now the main body of Jiangnan University).

1960, Nanjing agricultural machinery college was established on the basis of the second department of machinery, and moved to Zhenjiang the following year and renamed Zhenjiang agricultural machinery college (now the main body of Jiangsu University).

In May 1988, the school was renamed Southeast University. In 2000, Southeast University merged with Nanjing Railway Medical College founded by 1958 and was still named Southeast University.
