The school is a comprehensive university for nationalities directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, formerly known as Southwest University for Nationalities. Founded in July 1950, formally established in June 195 1 year, and renamed as Southwest University for Nationalities in April 2003.
Southwest University for Nationalities is one of the earliest universities for nationalities established in New China.
