1902, Zhang Jian founded Tongzhou Normal School in Nantong.

1952 In May, the Ministry of Education of the East China Military and Political Commission and the Ministry of Education of the Central People's Government decided to set up four institutions of higher learning in northern Jiangsu. Yangzhou established Subei Normal College and established the Department of History. Famous historians such as Qi and Bian have taught here successively.
