Nanjing University, referred to as Nanda for short, is a comprehensive national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC). It is listed as a world-class university construction university (Class A), a national demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, a scholarship receiving institution of China government for overseas students, a demonstration base for studying in China by the Ministry of Education, and a national dual-innovation demonstration base.

Nanjing University can be traced back to Nanjing Imperial College in 258 AD. The modern history of Nanjing University began with Sanjiang Normal School founded by 1902. Later, it was renamed Nanjing University on 1950 after the historical periods of Liangjiang Normal University, Nanjing Higher Normal University, National Southeast University, National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, National Central University and National Nanjing University. After the adjustment of 1952 departments, Nanjing University merged with the College of Arts and Sciences of Jinling University founded by 1888 and was still named Nanjing University.

Nanjing University was founded in 1902 and was established by Sanjiang Normal School. The main source of Nanjing University is Central University, and the secondary source is Jinling University. 1952 was incorporated into the main body. Jinling University 1888 was founded by Huiwen College, and 1952 merged with Nanjing University.
