1898 July, Shi Jing University Hall was established at the climax of the reform movement. It was not only the highest institution of higher learning in China at that time, but also the highest educational administrative organ in China. Wentong Library was later merged by the University Hall 1902 and became a translation library for training diplomatic and translation officials for the government. At the suggestion of Sun Jianai, the first minister of management, the Prime Minister's yamen agreed that Ding Weiliang would be responsible for the specific teaching and administrative affairs of Shi Jing University Hall. On August 9th, 0898, Sun Jianai, Minister of Management Research Department, said in "Memories of Preparatory Work for Shi Jing University Hall": "Ding Weiliang has been in China for a long time, eager to revitalize China, and is willing to fill the post of general manager of University Hall at the monthly rate of 500 yuan." Emperor Guangxu approved Sun Jianai's memorial on the same day and issued an order. According to Sun Jianai's performance, please encourage him and give him a hat to show his respect. "In this way, the missionary from the North Presbyterian Church in the United States became the first general teacher of Shi Jing University.
Since Ding Weiliang became the head teacher of Children's Literature Museum on 1869, the teaching of Children's Literature Museum has undergone a qualitative change. Because Ding Weiliang presided over the administration of Shi Jing Children's Literature Museum and achieved remarkable results, at the invitation of the Prime Minister's yamen in charge of the Children's Literature Museum, the Qing court specially conferred three titles on him at 1885. During his 26 years in charge of Shi Jing Tongwen Museum, many students he trained became the pillars of the Qing Dynasty.
Because of this, when Wentong Museum published "An Introduction to Updating Wu Ge" in 1889, it was highly valued by the yamen of the Premier of the Qing Government. Just reading the preface written by senior officials of the Qing government in front of this book, readers can't underestimate this set of teaching materials. The first is the preface written by Li Hongzhang, a college student and then an imperial envoy. In the preface, he said, "Westerners have devoted their whole lives to the number of weft detectors. There is no emphasis on ambition. Although its metaphysics is different from Confucianism in Han and Song Dynasties, it is really impossible to say that its metaphysics is just the purpose of learning things by saints. " For the author of this book, Li Hongzhang is even more impressed: "Mr. Ding teaches western learning, is a leader in the distance, is in charge of all the teaching of the same clan, and can read hundreds of books on classics and history. Today, he is learning to learn things. "
In addition to Li Hongzhang, several senior officials volunteered to preface Ding Weiliang's textbooks, including Right Assistant Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Xu Yongyi, Minister of Management Affairs of Wentong Museum, Dong Yao and Xu Jishe, famous representatives of Tongcheng School. Most of them are influenced by the "Westernization Movement". They are open to western learning and appreciate Ding Weiliang's knowledge, so they are full of confidence in this textbook. For example, Xu Jishe in the preface.
