Sun is one of the founders of China's energy industry. During his tenure as general manager of Zhongfu Coal Mine in Jiaozuo, Henan Province, Sun was the chairman of Jiaozuo Institute of Technology (now China University of Mining and Technology and Henan Polytechnic University).

After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Sun overcame all difficulties and urged Jiaozuo Institute of Technology (now China University of Mining and Technology and Henan Polytechnic University) to move its teachers, equipment and books to the west as a whole. Jiaozuo Institute of Technology, Beiping University Institute of Technology, Northeastern University Institute of Technology and Beiyang Institute of Technology (predecessor of Tianjin University) established the National Northwestern Institute of Technology (predecessor of Northwestern Polytechnical University) in Shaanxi (1938.07-1950.12), which trained a large number of construction talents for War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
