Physical geography is a science that studies the composition, structure, function, dynamics and spatial differentiation of the natural environment on the earth's surface. Modern physical geography focuses on the process mechanism and response system of the interaction between atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere, especially the impact of human activities on the natural environment. It applies the principle of geographical system to explore the relationship between human beings and the natural environment, the impact of global change on the natural environment, and the coordinated development among population, resources, environment and regional development. This major aims at cultivating high-level physical geography professionals with comprehensive quality, and requires mastering systematic theoretical knowledge, field work and experimental technology of physical geography and related disciplines, understanding the research trends in this field, and basically being able to independently carry out teaching, research and practical application related to this discipline.

Research interests include: biogeography, which mainly studies the geographical distribution of various plants and vegetation in the biosphere, the composition of plant species in various structural units (regions) of the biosphere, the characteristics of vegetation and its relationship with the natural environment. Carry out research on applied technologies such as vegetation protection and restoration, planning and construction of protected areas, and urban landscape design;

Environmental geography, mainly studies the theory and bioengineering technology of soil, water and environment degradation and restoration and reconstruction;

Mechanism and control technology of solute transport, soil salinization and groundwater pollution;

Study on technical system of environmental dynamic monitoring and early warning;

Soil geography mainly studies the material circulation in the soil circle and its relationship with agriculture and environment, information management of soil and land resources and the application of 3S technology, the theoretical and technical system of soil fertility and plant nutrition and fertilization, and the research and development of new fertilizers.
