Five-character poems originated very early. There are some five-character poems in The Book of Songs. But its official rise was in the Han Dynasty. Five-character poems have no certain meter, unlimited length, flat tone and free rhyme, but the sentence pattern of five words per sentence is fixed. Because it is not only different from Yuefu songs in Han Dynasty, but also different from the nearly physical poems and quatrains in Tang Dynasty, it is called five-character ancient poems.
It originated from folk songs. In addition to the existing seven-character sentence pattern in < Chu Ci >, Xunzi's "Ta" is a kind of miscellaneous verse written by imitating folk songs, which is mainly composed of seven-character rhymes such as < Shang Jun Ge > by Sima Xiangru and You Shi.
In our country of poetry, poetry has been the mainstream of literary history for thousands of years.
How did poetry come into being? It turns out that before the formation of literature, our ancestors compiled rhymes in order to pass on the experience in the production struggle to others or the next generation for memory and dissemination. According to Mr Wen Yiduo's textual research, [poem] and [ambition] are originally the same word, and [ambition] belongs to [scholar] and [heart], which shows that what stops in the heart is actually memory.
