Hunan University originated from Yuelu Academy, which was founded in 976. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in China. 1903 was transformed into Hunan university, and 1926 was officially named Hunan university. Tan Sitong, Cai E and other outstanding alumni have been trained. By 2022, Hunan University ranked 32nd in China University of Soft Science.
Two disciplines has two first-class national key disciplines and 14 national key disciplines. Seven disciplines were selected as national defense specialty disciplines, and the disciplines of chemistry, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering entered the ranks of "world-class disciplines", with more than 4,400 faculty members. As of April 2022, the school has 27 graduate schools and 74 undergraduate enrollment majors.

By the end of 20 13, the school had undertaken nearly 10000 scientific research projects at all levels, won 2 second prizes of national natural science, 3 second prizes of national technological invention, 1 first prize of national scientific and technological progress 1, 2 second prizes of national scientific and technological progress 18, and 6 second prizes of outstanding achievements of humanities and social sciences in national universities.
By the end of 20 13, the school had obtained more than 2,000 vertical scientific research projects and more than 300 horizontal scientific research projects, including the innovation team of the Ministry of Education, the national "973" and "863", the national science and technology support plan, the national natural science foundation and the national defense pre-research, with a total expenditure of more than 2.5 billion yuan. The school owns the National University Science Park, established the Industry-University-Research base in Lugu, Changsha High-tech Zone, established 53 high-level Industry-University-Research platforms for local enterprises, and established cooperative relations with thousands of enterprises in 32 provinces in Industry-University-Research.
