After Zhang Tiesheng's letter was discovered by Mao Yuanxin, his fate changed.

He spoke in the court debate, saying that he was just a "teenager" who didn't know the truth and made a "mistake" of tolerance and understanding in the complicated line struggle. He refused to accept the indictment and the sentence of 15 years imprisonment and deprivation of political rights for 3 years, and appealed. The appeal was dismissed and the original judgment was upheld.
After that, Zhang Tiesheng served a long term in Lingyuan Prison, Liaoning Province.
