On July 18, 2005, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Shanghai Second Medical University merged to form the new Shanghai Jiaotong University, and at the same time established the new Shanghai Jiaotong University Medical College. Shanghai Jiaotong University used to be the headquarters of "Jiaotong University", featuring powerful disciplines of engineering, life medicine and management. After the merger of Shanghai Second Medical University, Tangshan Jiaotong University is definitely a first-class school in China.

Shanghai Second Medical University consists of St. John's University Medical College (1896- 1952), Aurora University Medical College (1911952), Tongde Medical College (1952) Formerly known as Shanghai Second Medical College, 1985 was changed to Shanghai Second Medical University.
