Yanbian University, founded in April 1949, is a local comprehensive university with distinctive national characteristics. Before September 1957, it was under the Ministry of Higher Education of the State Council, and then under Jilin Province. 65438-0958, the school is divided into four parts: Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College, Yanbian Agricultural College and Yanbian Institute of Technology. 1March 959 Yanbian Institute of Technology merged.

From 65438 to 0996, five Yanbian universities, namely Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College, Yanbian Agricultural College, Yanbian Normal College and Yanbian Branch of Jilin Art College, were formally merged into the new Yanbian University. The school has also been identified as a national "2 1 1 project" key construction university. In 200 1 year, the school was identified by the Ministry of Education as a key construction institution for the development of the western region.
