The origin and development of 985:
1On May 4th, 998, at the celebration of the founding of Peking University100th anniversary, the then state leaders announced to the whole society on behalf of the China Productivity Party and the people of China: "In order to realize modernization, China should have a number of first-class universities with world-class standards."
In the first stage, the "985 Project" first built nine universities (also known as the Nine Universities Alliance), namely Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Science and Technology, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University and Harbin Institute of Technology, and then 39 "985 Project" universities were approved for construction, which is what we often call 985 universities.
