During the Anti-Japanese War, most schools moved to southwest provinces such as Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou. For example, Central University, Sun Yat-sen University, Jiaotong University and Fudan University moved to Chongqing, Wuhan University moved to Sichuan, Zhejiang University moved to Guizhou, and Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University moved to Yunnan to form The National SouthWest Associated University. Some universities have moved to the northwest provinces. For example, Beiping University, Beiping Normal University and Beiyang Institute of Technology formed Northwest United University, Jiaozuo Institute of Technology moved to Tianshui, Shaanxi, and Northeastern University and Republic of China University moved to Shanxi. Other universities moved from cities to remote counties and towns in the province. For example, Shanxi University moved to Jinnan, Xiamen University moved to Changting, Guangxi University moved to Liuzhou, Anhui University moved to Shashi, Hunan University moved to Chenxi, and Henan University moved to Jigongshan, accounting for about 1/4 of the national universities. 1By the end of 939, the universities were basically moved in.
