Kanagawa University is a famous comprehensive private university located in Yokohama. It was founded in 1928 by Tami Jisheng, an early politician in Showa. Founded in Yokohama City, formerly known as the School of Economics and Trade of Yokohama University. Due to the reform of academic system, it was transformed into a new university in 1949, and has now developed into one of the few comprehensive universities in Japan.

Since its establishment more than 80 years ago, Kanagawa University has trained a large number of talents for all walks of life in Japan and enjoyed a good reputation in society. The abbreviation of university is "Shenda", which is also used in official website and has become a registered trademark. However, because the abbreviation is the same as Kobe University, it is generally called "Shennai University" in university sports meetings. The predecessor of Kanagawa University was the first institution of higher learning in Yokohama to offer evening classes.
