The basic medicine of Sun Yat-sen Medical College is a national "double-class" construction discipline. Sun Yat-sen Medical College, where the clinical medicine major is located, has national and local joint engineering laboratories for molecular diagnosis of clinical medicine and joint laboratories for international cooperation in clinical and translational medicine of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

It has four national scientific research platforms, such as the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine and the Biosafety Level III Laboratory, and three national experimental teaching demonstration centers, such as basic medicine, clinical skills and medical virtual simulation.

The discipline of pharmacology of Sun Yat-sen University (formerly Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences) was founded in 1953, initiated by the older generation of pharmacologists such as Luo Qian and Wu Xiurong. The authorized point of master's degree and doctor's degree 1996 was awarded to the key disciplines of Guangdong Province, 1998 was approved as the "Five Ones" laboratory of Guangdong Provincial Health Department and the key laboratory of Guangdong Provincial Science and Education Engineering respectively, and 1999 was confirmed as the "National Drug Clinical Research Base".
