1, Durham University, a public university in Durham, England in the northeast of England. It was formally established by an act of parliament in 1832, and was granted a royal charter in 1837. It is the first recognized university in Britain after the establishment of Cambridge University and Oxford University for more than 600 years. It is generally considered to be the third oldest university in England and belongs to the first batch of universities.
