History of Tokyo University of the Arts May 1949 According to the Law on the Establishment of National Schools, Tokyo Art School and Tokyo Music School merged into the new Tokyo University of the Arts.

Tokyo Art School

1885 (Meiji 18), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology proposed to set up a government-run art school, and set up a "photo investigation department" with Ernest Fanor Rosa, Okakura Tenjin, Yoshinoya Jian Ye and others as the core.

1887 (20th year of Meiji) was renamed "Tokyo Fine Arts School" and moved to the present Ueno Campus.

Tokyo Music School

1879 (Meiji 12), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology established the "Music Investigation Department" headed by Izawa Yuki. Responsible for investigating music education in Japan. Since then, it has become a specialized music education institution, responsible for the music education of primary school students and kindergarten students affiliated to normal schools, training music teachers and promulgating the academic system. Since then, it has changed its name several times, from 1887 (the twentieth year of Meiji) to "Tokyo Music School". Later, it once became an affiliated school of Tokyo Normal University. After several institutional reforms, it was closed at Tokyo University of the Arts two years after its opening 1952.
