Dancer in the Dark is a feature film directed by Lars von Trier and starring bjork, catherine deneuve, david morse and peter stormare. The film tells the tragic story of a single mother working in a factory in a small town in the United States in the 1960s.

The story took place in the United States in 1960. Shamma, a Czech refugee, immigrated to the United States with his only son, Keane, and lived in a van garage rented from the house of the town policeman Bill and his wife Linda. Shamma works in a factory that produces stainless steel sinks, and makes trinkets in his spare time to make money. She loves musicals, and often goes to see musical movies with her good friend Kathy and participates in community musical rehearsals. Music is her pleasure. She is often immersed in the music rhythm imagined from the monotonous noise of life, and often has a sweet and simple smile on her face.

But when the kind Shamma told her secret to comfort the hypocritical Bill, the cruelty of reality pushed her to death. It turns out that Shamma came to the United States to earn money day and night when his son 13 years old, in order to get the help of advanced medical technology in the United States and to cure the eye diseases inherited in the family. Because of this eye disease, Shamma will soon go blind. When Shamma was fired from the factory because her eyes were almost blind, she found that Bill had stolen all the money she had saved to treat her son.

When kind Shamma went to ask Bill for his own money alone, he was slandered and planted by Bill. When Shamma and Bill were fighting for their wallets, Bill accidentally hit himself with his gun. The injured Bill tried to commit suicide by Shamma's hand, grabbed his wallet and forced Shamma to commit suicide. Shamma was convicted of first-degree murder and hanged within a week because he kept his promise to get his son treated and refused to tell the truth in court. Friends found out the truth, and their efforts to reverse his conviction failed to change Shamma's determination to save money to treat his son. Finally, Shamma's life came to an abrupt end in her song "That's All".
