If a family or a small office has two or more computers, it is natural to form a network. For convenience of description, the following convention is called LAN. In the home environment, you can use this network to * * * enjoy resources, play games that require multiple people to participate, * * * enjoy Internet connection with a modem, and so on. In the office, using such a network mainly solves the problem of sharing peripherals such as printers. In addition, the office LAN is also the infrastructure for multi-person collaboration.

Don't look at such a small network project, it used to require professionals to configure the network. At that time, most of the operations were manual, and ordinary users did not have the corresponding knowledge and experience. It just belongs to the situation that "high is not enough, low is not enough", which naturally limits its development. The emergence of Windows XP has broken this situation, which depends on its built-in powerful network support function and convenient wizard. After the user completes the physical connection, run the connection wizard, which can detect the network hardware, install the corresponding driver or protocol, and guide the user to complete all the configuration steps.

This paper introduces two networking schemes under Windows XP operating system, and introduces various unique functions of Windows XP in LAN.

I. Objectives:

Set up a home LAN: Externally, you can connect to the Internet, so that all computers in the LAN can enjoy the connection. Internally, you can enjoy network resources and equipment.

2. What network form is used?

Computers in the home network may have desktop computers or portable computers, such as palm computers or notebook computers, and may also have interfaces for various transmission media. So wired network is not suitable for all networks, and wireless interface must be considered. But if it can be clearly located on a pure wired network, there is no need to set up a wireless interface. So, here are two solutions:

1. Mixed wired and wireless.

2. Connect.

Three. Selection of network hardware

Network adapters (network cards) can use PCI, PC or PCMCIA interface cards (the latter two are mostly used in portable computers or notebook computers), and Windows XP also supports network adapters with USB interface. Which adapter to use depends on the computer connected to the network. No matter what kind of adapter, you need to pay attention to the coordination with the existing computer interface and HUB. Adapters with USB interface may be more adaptable, but for older computers, it is necessary to pay attention to whether USB interface is supported.

Network connection cable, commonly used coaxial cable and twisted pair cable are all familiar things, and there is not much explanation. Which one to adopt depends on what you think.

Four. Possible network structures and media

Ethernet structure: This structure is most popular with office or business users, and many people are familiar with it. Technical information and maintenance personnel are also easy to find, so I won't go into details.

Telephone line connection: The main features of this form are low cost and simple physical connection, which is suitable for most home users.

Radio waves: using electromagnetic wave signals to transmit signals, you can communicate without any wires, and you can also use them on the move. However, it is necessary to install a wireless adapter on each computer, and the high cost is certain. In China, wireless communication is rarely used for computer network communication. In the United States, a standard protocol called IEEE 802. 1 1b is used for wireless network communication. With the support of this protocol, the achievable network speed is 1 1 Mbps.

Verb (short for verb) is one of the programs.

This is a hybrid scheme of wired and wireless. See figure 1 for the specific structure. In this example, the hybrid network consists of four computers. PC 1 is the host, which has three paths to connect with the outside world:

1. Modem connected to the Internet: All computers in the whole network can access the Internet.

2. Wireless adapter: used to communicate with wireless devices in the network.

3. Hub: used to "drive" the downstream computers in this network.

In this scheme, PC 1 and PC2 must use Windows XP operating system, and the wired part is connected by Ethernet structure. HPNA in the figure is the abbreviation of home telephone line network adapter, which stands for home telephone line network adapter. The PC3 and mobile computer in the picture don't need to use windows XP operating system, and other windows versions can also be used. The network connection between the mobile computer and the host is wireless.

If you want to build a hybrid network, this scheme has typical functions and can expand the network scale without spending a lot.

About the connection operation:

The structure shown in figure 1 can only represent the physical connection relationship. After the physical connection is completed, the network can only be put into use after the connection operation is completed. Connection operations include the connection between computers in the local area network and the connection between the local area network and the Internet. The steps to establish the former connection are as follows:

1. Click the mouse to start, enter the control panel, click "Network and Internet Connection Network and Internet Connection", select the network connection, and enter the next step.

2. Choose to connect two or more LANs.

3. Right-click a connection.

4. Make sure to complete the connection task.

The connection operation in the local area network has been completed.

Let's talk about the connection between LAN and Internet. This situation mainly considers both speed and cost. The most convenient way for multiple computers to surf the Internet is that each computer occupies an independent telephone line, but this is beyond the ability of ordinary users and wastes too much resources. There is another way to use the cell gateway, but the cost needs to be increased, which is not the best way. A better way is to use a computer as the host server. This is not only technically feasible, but also has many other advantages, such as:

①: Because Windows XP has a built-in firewall, and the host computer is between the Internet and the terminal computer, the firewall of the host computer can be used to protect the extension in the local area network from attacks from the Internet.

②: Host "hides" between Internet and LAN, and acts as the cornerstone of gateway. On the extension, users feel as if they are directly connected to the Internet, without realizing that there is a host in the middle. In particular, it can make every computer in the LAN surf the Internet at the same time. Greatly reducing the equipment investment.

③: Except that the host computer must use windows XP operating system, all computers in the local area network can use an earlier version of windows.

④ If LAN needs to use different media (such as wired and wireless), Windows XP can be used as a bridge.

⑤: Although it has the function of enjoying network resources and equipment, it can also restrict others' access to private files and data, especially when the files are stored on the host.

⑥: It has the function of "universal plug and play" and can expand the scale of local area network at any time.

Alternative 2 of intransitive verbs

The following is a schematic diagram of this scheme. This scheme is suitable for small offices. Compared with the previous scheme, the wireless part is mainly removed, and the host and the extension are connected by cable or twisted pair instead of telephone line. All extensions are connected to the Internet through hubs and hosts, and can support printers. This is actually the most common LAN structure.

After the physical connection is completed, the following work needs to be done:

1. Open the network connection folder or find the network connection icon.

2. Right-click the Internet connection to share, and then right-click Properties.

3. Select the Advanced taskbar.

4. Select the check box "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" and select it.

5. Click OK. End the operation.

To enable the firewall of Windows XP, you must set it, but you can't do it without setting it. Setup process:

1. Open the network connection folder or find the network connection icon.

2. Right-click the Internet connection to share, and then right-click Properties.

3. Select the Advanced taskbar.

4. Select "Protect my computer and network by restricting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet". There is a check box for Internet connection firewall under it, and click to select it.

5. Click OK. End the operation.

Seven. A few words

A. The host computer must use windows XP operating system, and computers in the local area network can use earlier versions of windows, such as windows98, windows ME, windows2000, etc.

B. What is provided here is a typical situation, which can basically be superimposed to expand the network scale.

C. This article is based on the English beta version, and there is no guarantee for the future official version. In particular, the performance of the official Chinese version is completely consistent with this.
