Questions 26 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Science and daily life cannot and should not be separated. This is what rosalind franklin, a pioneer of British scientists, said. He firmly believed that the pursuit of science should be the right of all.

As a woman who worked in the first half of the 20th century, Franklin? . Unfortunately, America's contribution to some of the greatest scientific discoveries of our time-including the structure of DNA-is negligible.

In her lifetime. As the Minister of University and Science, one of my proudest moments was that I was able to correct this injustice in some way last month and launched a new Mars probe named after this outstanding British scientist.

Today, about international women? On this day, we should acknowledge the important work of a female scientist like Franklin and commemorate her by inspiring more women and girls to follow in her footsteps.

More than 60 years after Franklin? We live in a different world, and women play an important role at all levels of our society, not only in the fields of science, innovation, higher education and research.

British universities are in the leading position in the world in promoting gender equality. Athena Swan Charter was originally established to improve the representation of women in higher education science disciplines, and now it has 145 members. It has also expanded to promote gender equality in many disciplines, including art, social sciences, humanities, business and law.

In the past ten years, we have seen a 30% increase in the number of English women obtaining full-time undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem subjects). In the last academic year, women (3 1) accounted for more than half of the total number of Stem graduate students in British universities. The government is taking further measures to improve the status of women? Today was awarded to nine inspiring women? 50,000 dollars to develop inventions to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities we face as a society. From new materials to reducing plastic pollution to special devices to improve the posture and comfort of wheelchair users, these women are at the forefront of creating new technologies in the future.

This is a great progress, but receiving higher education is only half of the equation. In order to achieve real equality in this field, we need to ensure that talented women can enter the academic and leadership positions they desire and get the rewards they deserve.

The data shows that the more women climb, the harder it is to succeed.

Although women account for the majority of undergraduates in our university, less than half of the teaching staff are women. In 33 levels, only a quarter of professors are women, and the proportion of black women among all female academic staff is less than 2%.

I welcome the introduction of proactive strategies, such as the new initiatives of Harvard University in the United States.

Leicester, which I am visiting today, will increase the number of female professors by 1.5% every year, and the overall goal is to have 30% female professors by 2020.

There are also obvious differences in salary between different grades. In 20 16- 17, the gender pay gap based on the average wage of the whole industry was 1 3.7%. (34) There is still a way to go to ensure that women can be promoted to higher-level positions and get paid (35).
