The school, formerly known as Liupanshan University, was founded in 1975. Guyuan Teachers College was established on the basis of Liupanshan University with the approval of the State Council in 1978, and was renamed Guyuan Teachers College in 1994. In 2006, it was renamed Ningxia Normal University with the approval of the Ministry of Education and upgraded to an undergraduate college.
