Shanxi University, located in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, was founded by Timothy Richard, an Englishman, and Cen Chunxuan, then governor of Shanxi Province. It is one of the first three national universities in China. The predecessor of the school can be traced back to Jinyang Academy and Lingdetang Academy in Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the early years of the Republic of China, it was renamed Shanxi University, and it was confirmed as National Shanxi University in 19 18, and renamed Shanxi University in 193 1.

Shanxi University is divided into Wucheng Campus, Dadongguan Campus and Dongshan Campus (under construction). The School of Journalism is located in Wucheng Campus, the main campus. Wucheng Campus is divided into Lingde Campus and Wenying Campus. Lingde District is mainly an undergraduate dormitory, while Wenying District is mainly a postgraduate dormitory. Accordingly, there are two canteens: Lingde canteen and Wenying canteen.

20 17, School of Journalism of Shanxi University was formally established. In 20 19, journalism was selected as a national first-class undergraduate professional construction site, with the only first-class master's degree and master's degree in journalism and communication in the province.

The School of Journalism has a team of teachers with excellent professional level and outstanding practical ability. There are 33 faculty members, including 22 full-time teachers, 5 professors and 2 associate professors, and more than half of them have doctoral degrees. The College has also hired many experts from major media industries at the central and provincial levels as distinguished professor.

In 20 18, it was selected as the key innovation team of "133 1" project in Shanxi province, and formed a characteristic teaching and research team led by the winners of "National Talent Plan" and composed of young and middle-aged academic leaders and a group of young backbone teachers in Shanxi province.
