2005 Global University Rankings
According to The Times, in a new global ranking published on October 4th, 2004/kloc-0, Oxford University (the top five) and Cambridge University ranked among the global 10 universities, ranking 5th and 6th respectively among the 200 universities in the world. This ranking was made by The Times Higher Education Supplement, and Harvard University ranked first with nearly $23 billion in donations. American universities occupy 7 seats in the top 10, and Oxford University ranks the highest among universities outside the United States, which means that the top 4 universities are all American universities.
Among the top 50 universities, there are four universities in London, which also confirms London's position as a global education center. The London School of Economics ranks 1 1, Imperial College London ranks 14, University College London ranks 34th, and the School of Oriental and African Studies ranks 44th. Among the top 20 universities, apart from British universities, only one European university ranks among them, and that is the "Federal Institute of Technology" in Zurich, Switzerland, ranking 10.
However, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA can be called the smartest city in the world. In addition to Harvard University, which ranks first, there is Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which ranks third. California also scored high, with the University of California at Berkeley ranking second, California Institute of Technology fourth and Stanford University seventh.
The University of Tokyo ranks the highest among all universities in Asia, with 12, and Peking University, China, with 17. The comprehensive strength of Australian universities is also strong. Among the top 50 universities, there are 6 Australian universities, of which the highest ranking is the Australian National University, ranking 16 in the world. Speaking of France, it's a bit unsatisfactory. Among the top 50 universities, there are only two French universities, one ranked 27th and the other ranked 30th (French Polytechnic and French Teachers College). Only one university in Germany has entered the top 50, that is, the University of Heidelberg, ranked 47th, which is not as good as Hong Kong. Two universities in Hong Kong rank among the top 50.
Among the top 50 European universities, Britain holds 18 places, and there are 6 British universities in the top 50, but none of the top 50 European universities comes from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. Let's talk about the global university rankings. Among the top 200 universities, the United States has the largest number of universities, with 62 universities in the top 200, followed by Britain with 30 universities, Germany with 17 and Australia with 14 universities in the top 200 in the world. In the global ranking, there are 29 countries on the list.
This global university ranking is based on a survey of 1300 universities in 88 countries conducted by Higher Education Supplement of The Times, ranking according to the number of research achievements of each school cited by other schools or units. The research results of various schools are indicators of knowledge vitality. In addition, it also refers to the ratio of faculty to students, the ability to attract foreign students, scholars with international prestige in the global education market and other factors. Weighing the above factors, and then scoring, the best school score is 1000, and the rest universities are ranked according to scores.
The faculty of Harvard University in the United States won 40 Nobel Prizes, making it the best university in the world. The second-ranked University of California, Berkeley, is nearly 120 less than Harvard University, with a score of 880.2, while the score of Oxford University in the UK is 73 1.8, slightly higher than that of Cambridge University, with a score of 725.4. John O'Leary, editor of The Times Higher Education Supplement, said: "First-class universities are getting stronger and stronger in international competition. Taking into account the academic viewpoints of five continents and using the latest statistics, we provide a comprehensive description of the most advanced universities in the world for the ranking of global universities. "
In September this year, China Shanghai Jiaotong University published the ranking table of the world's 500 best research universities. Results Harvard University ranked 1, Stanford University ranked second, Cambridge University ranked third and Oxford University ranked eighth. Considering the universities in various countries, Britain ranks second after the United States.
Last February, rickie lambert, former editor-in-chief of the Financial Times, also published a report urging Russell Group, which is composed of nine top universities in the UK/KLOC-0, to establish a ranking table of the best research institutions in the world, through which their achievements can be measured.
