School of Mechanical Engineering of Hubei University of Technology originated in department of mechanical engineering, and was formed by the merger of agricultural machinery specialty of Hubei Agricultural Machinery College and light industrial machinery specialty of Hubei Institute of Light Industry on 1985. In 2003, it was renamed School of Mechanical Engineering. In 20 13, it was approved as the first batch of reform pilot colleges in Hubei province, with reasonable professional disciplines and strong teachers, which formed distinctive features in personnel training, integration of production and education, and serving regional economic and social development. At present, there are 2469 undergraduate and graduate students.

At present, the college has five undergraduate majors: mechanical design, manufacturing and automation, measurement and control technology and instruments, industrial engineering, robot engineering and intelligent manufacturing engineering. Among them, measurement and control technology and instruments are national specialty and national first-class specialty construction points, and mechanical design, manufacturing and automation are national first-class specialty construction points, excellent engineer training plan of Ministry of Education, top-notch innovative talent training plan of Hubei Province, and comprehensive professional reform pilot specialty of Hubei Province. Both majors have passed the professional certification of engineering education in China, and robot engineering and intelligent manufacturing engineering have been approved by the Ministry of Education.
